Friday March 6
Thank you for taking the time to read our blog.
***We need empty paper towel rolls for an upcoming project. If you have any, could you please send them to school with your child. Thank you!***
Here is what we were up to this week at school:
Math:
- long division
- scavenger hunt to practice multiplication
- Multiplication and Division midpoint check in (students brought these home)
Literacy:
- finished our novel "Odder" by Katherine Applegate
- morphology: adding -y, -ly, and -ily to the end of words
- made clamshells with messages about otters inside
- did a comprehension worksheet about Odder answering the following questions:
1. What does Odder learn about Kairi?
2. What does Gracie notice about human sounds?
3. Why did the otters become fearful when Odder was given the name of Jazz?
Social Studies:
- War of 1812
- Major-General Isaac Brock led the army in the early months of the war. Early on he got shot by an American sniper and died. His coat has been preserved at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.
- First Nations, French and British soldiers worked together to protect Canada
- John Norton was a 13 year old Mohawk boy who was a hero of the war
- another hero of the war was Laura Secord. She walked 32km through swampy land to warn soldiers of a surprise American attack
Science:
- we made an origami fortune teller to review facts about space, such as the closest planet to the sun is Mercury, a group of stars held together by gravity is called a galaxy, Saturn has 83 moons, the universe includes everything that exists including space, the Sun is the closest star to the Earth, most asteroids that get near Earth burn up in the atmosphere, when a comet is near the sun it releases gas and dust so that it looks like the comet has a tail
- we explored space websites that Mrs. Penner put in Google Classroom (feel free to check these out at home!)
