Friday Sept. 26
Good afternoon,
We spent a great deal of time this week focusing on the upcoming National Day for Truth and Reconcilation (Sept. 30). Some of the highlights of our learning included:
- reading many books on the topic such as: Smile So Big by Sunshine Quem Tenasco, When I was Eight by Christy Jordan-Fenton, Discovering Words by Neepin Auger, and Phyllis's Orange Shirt by Phyllis Webstad
- engaging in a sharing circle (and writing about) two questions: How would it feel to have a cherished item taken away? (such as students who went to residential school did) and What actions can we take to support reconciliation and honour residential school survivors?
- recognizing the fall equinox on Monday Sept. 22 by going on a community walk and "adopting" a tree that we will visit several times over the year to observe changes
- learning the Calgary Public Library's updated land acknowledgement (ask your child if they can say it to you!) and writing our own class land acknowledgement, with art to accompany it
- "I notice/I wonder" about various Indigenous photos
- creating feather art to represent how children felt at residential school vs. how children should feel at school
Math:
-statistics, dot plots, bar graphs, pictographs
Science:
-researching waste management using online books
Literacy:
- Book Tasting
- Friday letters
